What is scrapbooking?

A scrapbook is a decorated album containing photos,
newspaper clippings, and other memorabilia. The craft has
grown tremendously in recent years with "scrapbookers"
getting together to scrapbook at each other's homes, at
local scrapbook stores, at scrapbooking conventions, and
even on cruises. Scrapbookers share tips and ideas with
each other and enjoy the social outlet such events supply.
Oftentimes, scrapbooking is a ticket to a special
community. One visiting any scrapbook store, anywhere in
the country, friends and neighbors brought together by a
common bond attending workshops, examining new pens and
stickers, or searching aisles of specialty papers and
cardstock.
The art of scrapbooking has taken off largely due to multi-
level marketing enterprises such as Creative Memories. It
has become a multi-billion dollar industry with numerous
companies creating scrapbooking products. Scrapbooking has
even surpassed golf in overal popularity: one in four
households has a golfer; one in three has a scrapbooker.
> Some people scrapbook just to document their lives and to
save photos from the destructive effects of acid and heat.
Avid scrapbookers create layouts as a type of therapy.
Serious scrapbookers feel their time spent scrapbooking is
an investment in not just the past, but the future also.
They feel that the creativity expressed in their designs
contributes to personal growth that helps them learn more
about themselves.
All scrapbooks tell a story, usually about a family and the
people who pass through their lives. Most scrapbooks
celebrate such lives and tells a unique story of what was
done, how it was done, and who done it. The main purpose of
scrapbooking is to have a record of lives and loves of two
people that fell in love, got married and created a
generation of people to carry on the name of a family.
The cornerstone of scrapbooking is the album itself and
there are many different types of albums to fit any kind of
scrapbooking. Some albums have plastic covered pages to
hold all the pictures and mementos that are put in them.
Other albums have empty pages where pictures and prizes
need to be glued then carefully applied to hold all
treasures.
Technology has of course made scrapbooking look more
professional then ever today. However, most feel there is a
kind of charm to a scrapbook that has been done by hand
only that gives it that personal touch. Scanners, desktop
publishing programs as well as all kinds of printing
options today can take away the some of the fun out of
scrapbooking but to each is own today and we all need to do
what's right for the individual. Of course it's a
completely different story if one makes a digital
scrapbook, right?
