===========START of ARTICLE============
You can find thousands of articles telling you how to take
great photographs. But this tip will do more for your
photographic reputation than most all of the other tips
combined. And it's the easiest technique of all!

It's such a simple idea, yet it makes a world of difference.
Be ready for a lot more comments like, "Wow! That's a great
shot!" Here it is, the simple to apply, yet extremely
effective tip: Get close. Yep, that's it. Simply make
sure your subject fills the viewfinder.

This brings up the first step in making a great photo:
Deciding what you want to be the subject of your
photograph. Once you make that decision, the rest is
automatic.

Deciding what is the subject of your photograph. That's the
decision you need to make before pressing the shutter
release. Once you make that decision, the rest is
automatic.

Then a lady came by and thought the scene of Grandma and
her little carpenter was so cute she said, "Don't move!
My husband is a professional photographer and I want him
to take a picture for you". A couple of minutes later the
husband was dragged over and he very nicely agreed to take
a picture with our little point-wait-and-shoot camera.

Later that day when I downloaded the shots from the camera,
one stood out completely, as if it were taken in a studio
with special lighting. You guessed it! Instead of taking
his shot to include the girl, the table and all the tools
and nails on it, he decided his subject was the girl.

When I downloaded the pictures from the camera,
one stood out as if it were taken in a studio
with a very expensive camera. That's right! Instead of
composing to include the girl, the tools and all the other
stuff, he decided his subject was the girl.

And he also decided her expression was to be the real
subject of his photo. He framed his shot so my
granddaughter's face completely dominated the top left
quarter of the picture. The rest of the picture was there
only as a prop. He included a small part of the wood
project and the head of the hammer. Being a professional
he understood that the expression on her face would make it
a great shot. And he was right!

There is one very important exception to it being okay to
cut off a body part: When you send the photo to the
author to be made into a photo sculpture, or "cutout".

There is however, one time you DON'T want to cut off a body
part: That's when you send your photo to the
author to be made into a photo sculpture, or "cutout".
